Yoga for Beginners: 6 week course

Yoga has positive implications for our physical, mental and emotional wellbeing, but it can be difficult to know where to start. This beginners course will help you build confidence and understanding as well as helping you release tension, de-stress, and relax.

In this six week course we will practice different yoga postures, known as asana, with a focus on correct alignment, technique and safety. We will also explore breathing exercises and short meditation practices. These will be based on Hatha yoga, which is the foundation of all other physical yoga practice.

Mel will explain the benefits of different postures, such as why forward folds are calming and backward bending is energising. The postures will be accessible to all - this is a course for beginners so no matter how inflexible you think you are, this course is for you.

This course is also suitable for those who have some yoga experience but are keen to understand the philosophical context of modern yoga practice as well as learning more about breath and meditation.

You will:

  • Receive handouts containing some of the sequences we practice

  • Be introduced to some of the basic philosophical ideas of yoga such as the 8 limbs of yoga

  • Learn correct alignment and technique of postures, practicing in a safe way

  • Understand the effect that yoga has on our mental and emotional wellbeing

  • Learn how to prevent injuries and work around any existing injuries
